Bucerias Bilingual Community Center (BBCC)

Puerto Vallarta • Riviera Nayarit • Mexico

The BBCC was founded as a non-profit organization to promote Spanish/English education and interaction in the small pueblo of Bucerias, northeast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The mission is to offer English instruction to Mexican residents to improve their economic well-being, and to offer Spanish to a growing number of part and full time Anglo residents who are interested in meaningful interaction with their Mexican neighbors.

Cultural programs will also be offered such as Mexican Cooking and History, Meditation, Belly Dancing, Yoga and others as teachers become available. Classes for children and summer school day camps are also offered.

The Vision

The Bucerias Bilingual Community Centre will work to create a community where children and adults share the joy of developing skills and learning their neighbour's language and cultural background.

Organizational Goals

• To establish a year-round learning center that augments the educational needs of Mexican nationals and English-speaking visitors.

• To develop a solid base of qualified English and Spanish-speaking teachers.

• To provide language instruction that meets a broad range of skill levels and learning needs and promote cultural exchange through community education classes such as Mexican cuisine, history, dance, art, crafts, nutrition, and yoga.

• To develop a wide range of language resource materials - textbooks, workbooks, teaching manuals, reference books, tapes, CDs, and computer-based programs - to supplement formal instruction.

• To establish a computer lab for teaching language courses, computer literacy, and internet skills.

• To establish a web site for promoting the Center and its programs.

For the Spanish speaking children and adults of Bucerias it is not a piece of paper, but a language that is their passport to a richer life. In Mexico, being able to speak English offers better job opportunities, potentially higher wages, and in the eyes of many parents a better future for their families. But for many of these families English lessons have not been readily accessible.

Tucked away on the mountain side of Bucerias, the Bucerias Bilingual Community Centre is helping fill this need. In a beautiful setting of gardens and outdoor learning, games are played, verbs are practiced, and word by word, sentence by sentence, these enthusiastic learners become more fluent.

It is not always easy, but these determined children and adults return class after class in an effort to improve the quality of their lives. They know being bilingual is important here. The synergy is exciting as volunteer teachers experience the joy of hearing students utter their very first sentences in English and the students recognize their personal success. Together they are creating a passport to future opportunities.

Become a BBCC Volunteer

Becoming a BBCC volunteer is not difficult. You may offer your services via email or in person. However, we do ask that you specify the number of hours and the duration of your commitment, as our program is dependent upon our volunteers and their commitments. We also ask that our volunteers make some effort to speak in two languages, because this is what we are all about.

Our number one priority, of course, is finding volunteer English and Spanish teachers, but we also need other kinds of teachers or teacher teams to teach Mexican dance, art, cooking and cultural history classes.

We need volunteers for all sorts of other tasks as well; some of them short term and others ongoing. Here's a list. We hope something here tickles your fancy.

Teacher Aids

An aid helps the teacher organize and deliver the class; however, an aid does not have the primary responsibility for developing the lesson plans and executing them. This is a wonderful job for someone who wants to learn more about teaching or for someone who just enjoys working with students in a learning environment.

Administrative Assistants

Our administrative assistants do not teach, but they do take care of the front office and assist the Director in a variety of tasks, ranging from photo copying to searching the internet to creating fliers, signs, cards etc. This is a great job for someone who craves variety and would like to learn new computer skills.

Computer Hardware Gurus

Because all of our computer and other electronic equipment is used and constantly being added to, we need a volunteer who will regularly monitor our systems and report needed components and ways in which we can improve our operation.

Handymen

The BBCC needs volunteers who can handle light carpentry, painting and other building maintenance and improvement tasks.

Photographers

We welcome volunteer photographers with digital cameras who can help us capture some of the magic of our center when we are otherwise engrossed in making that magic. We use photos for PR and advertising purposes and also sometimes as gifts to the children and their families.

Event Coordinators

The BBCC typically has a Family Night at the end of each of the sessions for our ninos. The purpose of these parties is to afford the children opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned to their parents and to give the parents opportunity to meet the teachers and some of the other people involved in running and developing the Center. We hope to have other events in the future, particularly fund raising events.

Fund Raisers

The BBCC is always interested in volunteers with fund raising expertise and would like to reach a point in time where we had a pool of folks working with us to generate funds for the Center.
