San Miguel Launches First 24/7 English-Language Emergency Answering Service in Mexico

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE – At long last the English speaking community of “the most beautiful city in the world” has an English-language emergency answering service 24 hours a day at 066, San Miguel’s 911 number.

It is the first and only such service in Mexico.

According to 066 in English manager Layla Seaman, the service was initiated due to popular demand as the demand from local English-speaking residents keeps growing.

Layla Seaman says she came across her newly acquired responsibility — the service is barely over a month old — by accident. She is a volunteer both for the Red Cross and the Fire Department. But being the native born daughter of a British painter, she is naturally bilingual.

“I’ve been a volunteer for a long time and usually when I was on duty incoming calls in English were passed on to me. But little by little the number went up from five to 10 and I was the only bilingual person in the emergencies system. In talking to the people in charge, we came to the realization that we needed bilingual people 24 hours a day.”

The new 066-number English service kicked off three weeks ago and thus far the department has three full-time staff members working 24-hour shifts once every three days.
