The National Crusade against Hunger is a strategy of inclusion and social well-being that will be implemented on the basis of a wide-ranging, participatory process designed to combine efforts and funds from the federation, states and municipalities, as well as the public, social and private sectors and international organizations and institutions. The Chiapas government announced last week that it will provide micro-loans to single mothers as part of the National Crusade Against Hunger.
The Chiapas Family Development Agency announced in the state’s capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez that this money will go to help the women launch to improve their own small-businesses so that they can contribute more to their household income.
A state government press release said that the recipients of the government aid will receive business training and will be provided with tools to help them turn their projects into a reality.
The Chiapas government issued 21 million pesos ($1.6 million) in micro-loans to women in 84 of the state’s municipalities during the course of 2013, a trend becoming more common across Mexico.
The World Bank has warned about the dangers of such loans, saying that they could cause more harm than good if handed out too freely.
