Prominent officials from Mexico came to Dallas intent on convincing people there are parts of the country that are safe for travelers.
Roberto Borge governs the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in a region known as the Mayan Riviera that includes resort towns like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. It has long been a popular international destination for North Texas travelers.
But in recent years the lifeblood of its economy has been battling a terrible head wind. Headlines scream about an all-out war between drug cartels.
Just this past weekend, 49 bodies were found decapitated just south of Texas. It was nearly 1,000 miles from Cancun, but Borge said the headline still hurts.
Gov. Borge's message is clear. Mexico's drug war is real but is not being fought anywhere near his state.
"There hasn't been one issue with tourists related to drug cartels," he said.
Stephen Connaster publishes a travel magazine. He also believes the Mayan Riviera is safe and a great bargain right now.
"Mexico is going through its trials now. There are still safe places to go and we encourage our readers to go there," Connaster said.
Even the U.S. Department of State's warning to travelers about Mexico notes there are areas it considers safe. The Mayan Riviera is one of those areas.
