Easter Week Good Friday Parade in Oaxaca, Mexico Phil Saviano - Viva Oaxaca Folk Art | |
go to original April 18, 2014 |
Observance of Semana Santa in Mexico dates from the Spanish conquest. The Good Friday parade is a somber, silent procession, except for the sounds of drums, the rattler and of crosses being dragged across the cobblestones. It's a highlight of the annual Saints Week celebrations in Oaxaca city.
The main religious statues in the downtown churches are taken out for a stroll, placed on platforms surrounded by flowers and candles, and carried on the shoulders of men and women wearing brightly colored hoods.
