Some 70,000 children are victims of human trafficking, mainly for sexual exploitation purposes, said sources in a meeting this week in Mexico City.
Laura Vargas, general director of the National System for Integral Family Development (SNDIF), said that in these circumstances a joint effort is carried out to reduce factors that lead to the crime, as well as aiding victims and helping to implement a State policy on the subject.
According to Vargas, for its location and economy Mexico is a country of origin, transit and destination of victims of this crime, something that represents a violation of human rights, particularly children's.
During her address at the opening of the Forum of Analysis and Discussion on Human Trafficking of Children and Teenagers in Mexico, Vargas said that in 2013 SNDIF carried out 35 local campaigns that covered 265 cities to promote prevention of child sexual exploitation.
SNDIF rescued 209 children and adolescents who were sexually exploited, as well as 2,474 potential victims, said Vargas.
Vargas also said that governmental institutions, civil organizations and society in general must act promptly to prevent, investigate and punish those responsible for such crimes.
The forum, which concludes today, tackles legal framework on human trafficking, migration, aid to victims and multimedia strategies to prevent this crime, among other subjects.
