The transformation of the Movement for National Regeneration (Morena) into an official political party, which occurred recently, does not mean that the electorate just has one more option in next year's elections. It will also generate a restructuring of the political forces in which the new group will compete with the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) for leadership of the Mexican left, activists and analysts agree.
Founded by former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Morena secured its registration as a party almost two years after its exit from the PRD in September 2012, following the loss of presidential elections to Enrique Pena Nieto from the Party of the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI).
Even though López Obrador, at that time, denied that his exit from the PRD was due to a “breakdown,” since that date, the former standard bearer and leading PRD members have traded criticisms on subjects like PRD's entry into the Pact for Mexico - a political agreement with the Peña Nieto government, PRI and the National Action Party (PAN) - and analysts anticipate the confrontation will increase as the 2015 elections draw closer.
