First there was a feminist punk rock movement known as “Riot grrrl;” now there’s a feminist rapper whose lyrics could literally start a riot. Mexican rapper Luisa Velázquez, who goes by “Menstruadora” (Menstrator), just released a rap song aimed at women who want to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
The song is a lyrical act of rebellion by the 26-year-old self-proclaimed “lesboterrorist” considering the majority of Mexico’s 32 states have criminalized elective abortions (therapeutic abortion is allowed everywhere in Mexico).
Velázquez says she had always been discreet when helping women seek abortions. But then she saw something that inspired her to speak out — or sing out, as the case may be.
“I saw a Mexican feminist organization called "Las Libres" publicly sharing information about Misoprostol in Guanajuato, a state where abortion is illegal; I decided to join this kind of campaign to raise awareness about women’s right to choose,” Velázquez told Fusion in an e-mail interview from Mexico City.
“With this song I exercise my right to freedom of expression and, of course, I invite women to exercise their right to access information and make decisions about their own body,” said the activist rapper.
The Spanish-language rap song is “instructional” but also an anthem to empower women in a society that criminalizes their right to choose.
