A Texas-based charity providing an educational facility for Tarahumara youngsters in Mexico is asking for assistance from citizens to provide the needed aid.
Pilar Pedersen and Gilbert Valenzuela of Alpine have provided aid for a school in Bacabureachi, two hours south of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre. The school houses 100 students, grades one through eight.
“Because the Tarahumara are semi-nomadic and live on isolated homesteads, the State of Chihuahua maintains live-in educational centers,” Pedersen said. “This particular facility has received no funding for maintenance since its construction in the 1960s and is in serious disrepair.”
She said the first small group of volunteers will leave Alpine for Bacabureachi Sept. 3 to spend five days addressing their most urgent needs, which she said includes repairing roofs and delousing students. Accommodation for the volunteers will be in nearby cabins.
