AUSTIN — Reacting to harsh criticism from Mexico’s government, Gov. Rick Perry extended an invitation Wednesday to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to come to Texas see the professionalism of the National Guard troops he has deployed to the border.
While praising the cooperative trade and shared heritage between Mexico and Texas, Perry also also took Peña Nieto to task for failing to do enough to stop illegal immigration.
“Our challenges today are partly a consequence of the failure of the Mexican government to secure its southern border from illegal immigration by unaccompanied children and other individuals from Central America, or to deploy adequate resources to control the criminal element in Mexico,” Perry wrote.
In late June, Perry decided to deploy 1,000 troops to the border as support for law enforcement and the federal border patrol. The military does not have authority to detain or question migrants, but it can lend surveillance and other tactical support.
Critics, pointing to the national attention the decision gained him and his gear-up for a presidential run, have dismissed the deployment as a publicity stunt. Peña Nieto told a Mexican news organization last week that the deployment was “reprehensible” and “an attack on good relations and neighborliness.”
