Enedelia Cruz had tears in her eyes as she pointed to the Yale office of former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, condeming him in Spanish for the 1997 massacre of 45 people in Acteal.

“We can not remain silent with this barbarity happening,” she said, in Spanish. “I want to go back to my country, to walk through the streets with my son without fear.”

About 20 people stood outside of Zedillo’s Yale office Monday night to protest the immunity granted to Zedillo by the U.S. Department of State and Yale University. The former president has been criticized and a lawsuit filed against him for allegedly trying to cover up the 1997 massacre.

Zedillo now is the director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and acts as an adjunct professor.

The plantiffs in the lawsuit said they survived the massacre of 45 people by paramilitaries with alleged government ties. They are alleging Zedillo knew about the massacre, covered it up and broke international human rights laws.
