MEXICO CITY – State Health Secretary Armando Ahued Ortega commenced the vaccination campaign against influenza in Mexico City with over 820,000 doses on Thursday last week.
The vaccination aims to inoculate populations at risk like children under 6 years old, pregnant women, adults over 60, and people who suffer from chronic respiratory and degenerative diseases like diabetes, cancer or HIV-AIDS, said Ahued Ortega
In the Old City Hall in Mexico City’s downtown, Ahued received the vaccine and asked all doctors, nurses and health staff from all institutions to protect themselves from the virus in the same way.
“I got inoculated because I wanted to demonstrate the confidence I have in the vaccine,” said Ahued.
“I wanted to encourage people to get vaccinated, especially those at risk, in order to reduce contagion,” said Ahued.
Last year, there were 933 cases of Influenza AHINI and 117 unvaccinated people died, many with comorbid factors like diabetes, chronic respiratory problems, said Ahued.
The health secretary also encouraged people to get inoculated as soon as possible because the vaccine takes about 40 days to take effect.
