Ambulance Drone (TU Delft)
Sure, they can oversee crops and maybe even walk a dog, but thanks to their military use, nowadays drones are known more for taking lives than for saving them. That could all change, thanks to 23-year-old Alec Momont, a savvy graduate student at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He has created an unmanned aerial vehicle that doubles as - wait for it - an ambulance.
In the video above Momont explains that lengthy emergency-response wait times inspired him to create his potentially lifesaving drone. In the European Union, according to the project’s YouTube page, it takes about 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive on the scene. Similar response times can be found in parts of the U.S. - and sometimes first responders take even longer. Because of a shocking average response time of 58 minutes, some Detroit residents no longer even bother to call 911.
