Saltillo has made dinosaur history following the conclusion that a partially articulated skeleton of a theropod discovered in 1998 is in fact a new species for Mexico.
The animal that lived 72 million years ago has been named Saltillomimus rapidus in honor of the city where it was found, and also represents a new mystery for paleontologists for its characteristics.
“The skeletal structure is an enigma because it has a hip structure that strongly resembles animals in Asia, while it also has characteristics that are North American,” said Martha Carolina Aguillón Martínez, vertebrates paleontologist at the Desert Museum, where a reconstruction of the dinosaur is now on display.
Although the skeletal remains were discovered 16 years ago, it wasn’t until recently that its singularity was confirmed. It was introduced at an event yesterday at the museum, where Aguillón Martínez said it was the first articulated theropod to be recovered in Mexico.
