Brigitte Beas is one of very few Americans who regularly travels across the border from San Diego to Tijuana to volunteer at a local Catholic Mission whose aim is to help the homeless residents of the Tijuana Canal, a region known as "El Bordo."

Beas described the living conditions in the canal and the background of the El Bordo populace. The majority of the El Bordo's residents are deportees who had well-established lives in the U.S.
