MEXICO CITY - Mexico City's chief of police resigned Friday amid criticism about how the department handled protests over the deaths of 43 students in September.

Public Security Secretary Jesus Rodriguez Almeida stepped down effective immediately, Mexico City Mayor Angel Mancera announced.

He didn't give a reason for stepping down.
