According to a new study, globally the average lifespan has extended by 6 years since 1990.

Dr. Christopher Murray, professor of Global Health at the University of Washington and his team conducted the study, which was called the Global Burden of Disease Study. It was published in The Lancet medical journal.

Dr Murray said, “The progress we are seeing against a variety of illnesses and injuries is good, even remarkable, but we can and must do even better. The huge increase in collective action and funding given to the major infectious diseases such as diarrhea, measles, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria has had a real impact. However, this study shows that some major chronic diseases have been largely neglected but are rising in importance, particularly drug disorders, liver cirrhosis, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.”

In their research, the team found that life expectancy in U.S. rose more than 3 years from 1990 to 2013. For a boy born in this year, his life expectancy will be 76.3 years while that for an American girl would be 81.4 years. This places American women at 35th in the world and men at 39th, behind wealthy countries in Asia and Middle East and most of Western Europe. Since 1990, deaths due to diabetes, Alzheimer and kidney diseases have been rising, while deaths due to road accidents and violence have reduced.
