Two weeks ago the Mexican Supreme Court defined the murder of Mariana Lima Buendía as a gender-based murder, but much more could be done by the courts to address this issue. According to official statistics, more than seven femicides a day occur in Mexico, and over the past 28 years 44,000 women have been murdered. Yet authorities have brought very few perpetrators of femicide to justice. Mariana's mother, Irinea Buendía, continues to denounce the fact that her daughter's murderer walks free today. Following reports highlighting widespread insecurity and violence against low-income and indigenous women, the federal government’s response was sobering: violence against women, it said, is one of the biggest challenges faced by the current administration.

Also in response, it pointed to advances in education for girls, such as attendance increases in primary schools from 94% to 96% and in secondary school from 75% to 86%, and new reforms that will improve health care for women.

The government also offered the caution that the situation had to be looked at “within the overall context of Mexico’s social ills.“

The plight of poor women in Mexico was the focus of a recent United Nations study, this country being part of the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Mexico was one of seven countries that signed the original convention adopted in 1979.

In 2012 countries that had signed on as participants presented their respective reports to the convention, as did various national and international non-governmental organizations. Those reports paint a picture of lives fraught with danger and insecurity.
