Five of every 10 Mexicans have trouble being accepted because they are brown-skinned. More than half of all Mexican women self-identify themselves with a skin coloring lighter than they really are, and 40% of men also. They believe that a brown skin color is not synonymous with beauty.

"For the women in our county - influenced by frankly racist publicity in the communication media and the prejudices against brown complexions we struggle with - it is harder than for men to admit to their true skin color," says Conapred in a report for the International Day for Eliminating Racial Discrimination.

According to the National Survey on Discrimination in Mexico (Enadis, 2010) carried out by the Council to Prevent Discrimination, four of every 10 persons say that people are treated differently based upon the color of their skin, a situation which is even more apparent in low socioeconomic populations.

In Mexico racism is more clearly linked with the indigenous population and with those who appear indigenous. The Mexicans who suffer the greatest discrimination are brown-skinned, also women, youths, children, elderly, handicapped, those with sexual diversity and those of African descent.

The Survey indicated that eight of every 10 people say their rights have not been respected because of their customs, culture, Spanish accent, education, for being from another place, dressing differently and having a different religion.

Seven of every 10 say they are treated differently because of their physical appearance or being poor.
