Ready for the Road (Google Self-Driving Car Project)
Google has been given the green light to test its autonomous vehicles on California roads this summer.
Google says the new self-driving prototypes will drive with the same software that their existing fleet of self-driving Lexus RX450h SUVs uses.
They explain its self-driving cars have experienced only 11 accidents in their six years of testing and that all accidents were human error. The company also says that its fleet of driverless cars has already logged nearly one million miles of cumulative driving inside its own test facilities.
On average, the cars are driven about 10,000 miles each week, the company explains, says the cars “have lots of experience to draw on.” Google says the numbers convert to about 75 years of human driving experience.
