An estimated 40 people died Friday in a large-scale shootout between law enforcement and criminal suspects in western Mexico.

A Federal Police official speaking anonymously stated most of the dead are suspect criminals.
Though details are scant, The Associated Press obtained a video showing police coming under fire a the ranch; bodies can be seen strewn throughout the footage.

The shoot-out occurred in Michoacan, a southwestern state of Mexico.

Governor Salvador Jara told Radio Formula that gunmen attacked the federal police after being pulled over near the ranch along a highway.

The area is known to be dominated by the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which has mounted several large-scale attacks on federal and state forces recently.
