This is bullfighting. The bull is afraid and confused. Blood gushes from his wounds as he's stabbed over and over again. He falls down, writhing in pain. Then he dies - slowly. One minute is all you need to see to know that this torture is wrong. (PETA UK)

There are some traditions that are endearing. Family holidays, weddings and birthdays come to mind as traditions most people have enjoyed for years. And then there are traditions that are not as endearing.

Many countries are known for their traditions. They are what sets the country apart from the rest of the world. The United States celebrates the Fourth of July with fireworks, parades and barbecues. In Latin America, a quinceañera – or a girl’s fifteenth birthday – is cause for a huge celebration with gorgeous dresses, bountiful food and lots of music. In day-to-day life, Japanese citizens take off their shoes when entering a home and put on slippers offered by the host.

Traditions can make up the cultural fabric of a country. However, that doesn’t always make them right. There are a number of traditions that, unlike celebrations and respectful gestures, are better left in the past.

Recently, animal rights activists in France succeeded in getting bullfighting taken off the country’s cultural heritage list. While the practice is better known in countries like Spain and Mexico, it is also an occurrence in some small cities and villages in southern France, which borders Spain. Dozens of these fights occur a year, usually during celebrations like Easter.
