Traveling between the United States, Mexico and Canada is about to get much easier.

The United States Department of Homeland Security has announced that it is joining forces with Public Safety Canada and the Secretariat of Governance of Mexico to begin the creation of a North American Trusted Traveler network.

The agreement was signed by Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson in July, and has now been signed by representatives of both Mexico and Canada. The North American Trusted Traveler network would make it easier for eligible travelers to apply for expedited screening programs in all three countries.

Trusted Traveler programs are a vital tool to facilitate international travel and trade,” said Johnson. “I am pleased to work together with Canada and Mexico to lay the groundwork for expedited arrival screening for pre-approved travelers from all three countries.  We are committed to enhancing the travel experience through our risk-based approach to aviation security, and this expanded partnership will benefit travelers all across North America.”

Mexican residents who are members of the Viajero Confiable program can now sign up for the U.S. - Canada NEXUS trusted traveler program, making it easier for customers in both United States and Canadian international airline terminals.

On the other hand, Americans and Canadians can now apply to become members of Mexico’s Viajero Confiable program, which will save time for tourists and businesspeople arriving at international terminals in Mexico. Eligible travelers will be able to apply for each program beginning in 2016.
