A multibillion-dollar legal cannabis market could be in Mexico's future. It depends on how serious the government is about legalization. (Paco Servin)
The tide of marijuana legalization in the United States is creating waves that can be felt as far away as Mexico City. Neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa — relatively well-off and tending toward pot-friendly lifestyles — are in the vanguard of a new era of much stronger, much more expensive, U.S.-grown cannabis.
But even though simple possession has been decriminalized in the capital, growing your own is still illegal. It's as though the law is encouraging marijuana consumers to deal with the drug-trafficking underground. That contradiction cannot last, legalization advocates say.
...Some think there are two reasons for the noticeable improvement in the quality of marijuana in Mexico. One if the effort that the organized drug traffickers are making to compete with U.S. cannabis. The other is the change in habits on the part of Mexican consumers. They want more refined products.
That change, in turn, has led to another trend — the advent of micro-greenhouses belonging to the independent consumers themselves, or at least those who have learned how to grow their own cannabis. Homegrown has many advantages, not the least of which is eliminating the risks involved with acquiring your stash in the illegal market.
