Interviews From Mexico - Violence Against Women and Feminicides (teleSURtv)
Amnesty International called on the Mexican government to adopt effective measures to prevent violence against women and ensure that cases of femicide are investigated as such, with due diligence and without giving way to impunity.
On November 1, the international organization launched a campaign to combat violence against women in Mexico. The campaign, called Women Live, began with a concert by Oaxacan singer Lila Downs at the National Auditorium.
In announcing the campaign, the executive director of Amnesty International's Mexico section, Perseo Quiroz, said that the creation of a legal framework to address the murders of women for reasons of gender has not been enough to put a stop to this violence.
He said that data from the United Nations Women, a UN agency for gender equality and the empowerment of the woman, indicated that in 2013 there occurred 2,502 female deaths in Mexico that were presumed to be homicides, which means that in the country seven women are murdered every day.
