Hate Speech Will be Punished by Sensible Voters, Mexican Ambassador Tells Trump

Donald Trump gets called out big time at Latin Grammys (USA Today/Amelia Lily)

In the harshest words used so far by a Mexican government official to denounce Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s derogatory characterization of Mexican immigrants, Mexico’s Ambassador to the Unites States Miguel Basáñez decried, “The Republican primary campaign has been dominated since the summer by racist rhetoric and ignorance that has inflamed hate and harmful stereotypes.”

While not explicitly naming Trump, Basáñez told me in an interview: “Irresponsible words should have consequences. Political speech that doesn’t reflect the high values of freedom, respect and acceptance of diversity embedded in American society, will not go unnoticed. The intelligence of sensible American voters will punish the irresponsibility of this inflamed rhetoric in time.”

Basáñez’s message seems to signal a shift in Mexico’s passive response to Trump’s vilification of Mexicans. Trump kicked off his presidential campaign in June by calling Mexican immigrants “rapist” and criminals. His comments have sparked outrage and condemnations by Latinos and Mexican immigrants alike.

Hoping that the “Trump phenomenon” would fade away, the Mexican government has been largely quiet. It has ignored Trump’s regular rants against Mexican immigrants, his frequent calls for deporting over 11 million undocumented workers (6 million of whom are Mexicans), his constant calls to build a “beautiful” wall on the border and his pledge to force Mexico pay for it.

Basáñez is not your typical diplomat. He is known to speak his mind.
