US residents who are Mexican citizens will soon be able to vote absentee in governor and legislative elections held in Mexico.
Mexico's National Institute of Elections recently approved a program allowing Mexicans living abroad to apply for voting credentials to be able to cast ballots in governors and federal senate races taking place in their home states in Mexico.
Up to now, Mexicans have been able to cast votes from abroad only in presidential races. The additional offices are being included in absentee voting as part of efforts to promote greater voter participation in Mexico's elections.
The Institute announced on its website that the new voting credentials will be issued at Mexico's embassies and consulates, precluding the need for Mexicans to return home to obtain them.
