The owner of a circus in the southeastern state of Yucatan was detained on charges of animal cruelty, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said.
After receiving a report of the abuse, the AG Office “executed an arrest warrant against the owner of a circus in Merida,” capital of Yucatan.
“There is sufficient evidence to charge the circus owner,” whose name was not released, with causing harm to members of species listed as endangered or protected, the AG Office said in a statement.
Officials who visited the circus “found several animals with physical injuries,” including a bear, a Bengal tiger, an African lion and three spider monkeys, the statement said.
A law that took effect in July bars Mexican circuses from keeping wild animals, with fines of up to 3.36 million pesos ($228,687) for violations.
