Millions of Catholics around the world have commemorated the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego in December 1531.

This day is particularly important for Mexican Catholics who are profoundly connected and engaged with the message that the Virgin of Guadalupe had for Juan Diego — a message of peace, intercession, and healing. Many have spent the past nine days observing the feast day with both religious and secular events.

...Every year, millions of faithful Catholics devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe start their pilgrimage to the heart of Mexico City to arrive at the most symbolic place, the Basilica of Guadalupe. There, millions wait to honor her and to express their love and faith. Some reports say that up to 12 million people visit the Basilica between Dec. 11 and 12.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is an important symbol for Catholics around the world, but for Mexican Americans, the Virgin of Guadalupe is more than a symbol of faith, she has become an image of history, pride, and love.
