Domestic violence in Latin America and the Caribbean affects millions of women, and in many countries its hard to police the problem. Research suggests it's also a problem among Latino families in North America as well.
This campaign launched last week by NO MÁS (NO MORE) takes to social media to stand against the problem, and their campaigns are gaining traction with both Latino and non-Latino advocates. Their effort began with data, and the simple tagline of "Decimos No Más (We Say No More)."
NO MÁS, Casa de Esperanza, and the Avon Foundation for Women conducted a study (PDF), which found that one in four Latinas knew a victim of sexual assault, and nearly half of the 800 Latinas surveyed knew someone who suffered from domestic violence. Eighty-three percent of those Latinas added that they would be willing to talk to their children about domestic violence — which suggests a large support base for NO MÁS' mission.
The organization has since released numerous PSA video messages, and has been drumming up public support through other social media campaigns. There is also an online pledge against domestic violence. Supporters have taken to Twitter using the hashtags #WeSayNoMas and #DecimosNoMas.
