The 882,225 tickets to see Pope Francis during his Feb. 12-17 visit to Mexico will be distributed in the next few days by the dioceses, the visit's coordinator, Monsignor Eugenio Lira said.
"There was much concern about the issue of the tickets. They should be distributed this week in the dioceses, we could not release them too far ahead of time for security reasons," Lira said in a press conference on Sunday.
The tickets, which weigh 1,600 kilos (1.7 tons), were packed in 93 crates, one for each diocese, on Saturday, Lira said. The tickets have built-in security features to avoid unauthorized duplication.
The biggest event will be the Mass in Ecatepec, a city in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, which is expected to draw 300,000 people, Lira said.
Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in Mexico City on Feb. 12 and meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto the next day.
