Update: Trump Approves GOP Platform: It's 'Like a Donald Trump Speech' (Washington Examiner)

The Republican Party, as a whole, now wants Donald Trump’s Mexican border wall.

The draft of the GOP party platform explicitly calls for building the wall — after the man who is now the presumptive presidential nominee spent more than a year obsessing over it.

The staunchly conservative draft, finished Tuesday, proposes a “border wall” that would cover “the entirety of the Southern Border and must be sufficient to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach proposed the amendment.

The Republican Party platform usually calls for stronger control of borders and illegal immigrantion. But in past platforms, the GOP simply asked for a fence — an idea Congress approved in 2006, but never funded.

“The double-layered fencing on the border that was enacted by Congress in 2006, but never completed, must finally be built,” the 2012 platform said.

The switch from a “fence” to a “wall,” then, shows the party falling behind Trump’s rhetoric. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, speaking with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, even acknowledged that the wall amendment was a “hat tip” to Trump.

The brash billionaire has called for a Mexican border wall since day one of his campaign, when he said America needs to keep out the “rapists” and the people “bringing drugs” from Mexico. He insisted Mexico would even pay for the wall, to which former Mexican President Vincente Fox responded: “I’m not going to pay for that f---ing wall.”
