South America's first Olympic games has ended as the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games come to a close. CNN's Shasta Darlington reports. (CNN)

The Caribbean and Latin America finished with a whopping 133 medals in total as the curtains came down this weekend on the 2016 Paralympics.

Host Brazil led the entire region with a whopping 72 medals, 14 of which were gold medals while there were 29 silver and 29 bronze medals, respectively.

Colombia finished in second place with 17 medals but only two were gold while five were silver and 10 bronze.

Cuba and Mexico tied for the third spot on the Caribbean and Latin America medal count with 15 medals apiece. Cuba, however, secured the second most gold medals in the region with while they also had one silver and six bronze.

Mexico finished with 4 gold medals, two silver and nine bronze.

Argentina was further down the table at fourth with five medals – 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.

Venezuela finished with four medals at 6 while Trinidad & Tobago rounded out the medal count for the region with three. T&T secured one gold, one silver and one bronze while Venezuela had 3 silver and 3 bronze medals, respectively.
