Republican Pence Sparks Social Media Outrage with #ThatMexicanThing Comment

Mike Pence: 'Senator, you whipped out that Mexican thing again' (PBS NewsHour)

An unfortunate turn of phrase by the Republican candidate for the United States vice presidency during his TV debate with his Democrat opponent has become a hot topic of discussion on social media, trending as #ThatMexicanThing.

During the debate on Tuesday, Senator Tim Kaine repeatedly drew attention to remarks made by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump against Mexicans, which have included describing them as rapists and criminals.

"Senator, you've whipped out that Mexican thing again," Mike Pence - who is also Indiana governor - retorted towards the close of the debate.

The phrase sparked outrage among Trump detractors, who found reason to critique Pence, who had maintained his composure during the debate in contrast to the style adopted by Trump in his recent face-off with Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The hashtag #ThatMexicanThing rapidly spread on Twitter, becoming the most talked about part of the debate.
