Argentina has been leading the fight against femicide with the Ni Una Menos (Not One Less) movement that began with a massive protest in June 2015. (teleSUR)

Mexican band Cafe Tacvba refused to play one of their most famous songs, “La Ingrata,” at a concert in Costa Rica as a social commentary about the problem of femicide in Latin America.

After fans requested the song, whose lyrics end in femicide, at the music festival, the band took to Facebook to explain why they refused to play it, sharing a November Q & A of the band with Argentine media outlet La Nacion where they discussed their mixed feelings about the song they wrote two decades ago.

“For us, women are always deserving of much respect, love and care,” the group wrote in their Facebook post.

The 1994 song, influenced by the instrumental and lyrical style of corrido music from northern Mexico, tells the story of a lover scorned who wants to hurt his “ungrateful” lover. The song ends with the man killing his lover and speaking of being with her at her funeral.

As the band has grown, they have become more socially conscious and aware of the effect their lyrics have on pop culture.

“Many people can say that it is only a song, but songs are culture and that culture is what makes certain people feel the power to assault or harm someone,” singer Ruben Albarran told La Nacion.
