Forced to Flee Central America for Being LGBT (Doctors Without Borders)

After arriving on foot to Mexico, Marisol decided against taking “La Bestia” cargo train North because it was too dangerous for a solo female traveler. Instead, she decided to file for asylum. As a child, Marisol suffered abuse from her stepfather. Since she arrived at the shelter she has been supporting other female victims of abuse. She also acknowledged her homosexuality and has been staying in the separate LGBT part of the compound.

“In Honduras 18 year old girls are expected to get married and have children. I had more ambitions for myself – I wanted to study, I was the best in my class. But the government gives us no assistance, and then the gangs expected me to pay a “tax” from the little money I was making and saving up for university.”
