Politicians in Mexico are desperately looking for a way to prevent left-wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador from winning the presidency, a new report from The Washington Post revealed this week. Many Mexicans are looking for a Mexican version of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron won the 2017 Presidential elections in France over right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen, who many had compared to US President Donald Trump.
Macron is, apparently, the model many Mexican politicians are searching for in order to prevent AMLO from winning the presidency in 2018. That person, like Macron, would unite the country and defend it from populism with a centrist and pragmatic government.
Current President Enrique Peña Nieto’s approval rating has reportedly been falling fast, especially among younger demographics, who are reportedly sick of the corrupt political class in general. But somewhere out there is a political and social elite of Mexico who can beat AMLO.
The Post‘s report said the search for a Mexican Macron has been “feverish,” and has thus far come up with a short list of possible candidates. Some are independents, while others have military roots or work in the current administration. Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray has been named, who caused controversy when inviting President Donald Trump to the presidential palace.
