The fate of immigrant children who cross the U.S.-Mexico border without a parent often rests in their own hands. KIND makes sure they have representation.

The strife in Central America led to an alarming increase in the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years. While that trend is down in 2017, there are still tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who potentially must represent themselves in immigration court.

The interview that follows features Jennifer Podkul, director of policy for KIND — Kids in Need of Defense. Podkul and Newsy's "The Why" host Chance Seales talk about the heartbreaking challenges of representing some of the most vulnerable members of our immigration system.
