The majority of Mexicans view the United States more unfavorably than any time in the past decade and a half, and the sentiment is fueled largely by President Donald Trump’s call for a border wall, according to a poll released by the Pew Research Center.

Nearly two-thirds of Mexicans view the United States negatively, more than double two years ago, according to the poll. An estimated 94 percent of respondents oppose the wall, a signature policy of the president’s since he announced his candidacy in June 2015.

In addition, only five percent of Mexicans have confidence that Trump would do the right thing regarding world affairs, representing the president's lowest rating among 37 nations.

The findings also measured attitudes of Mexicans toward Mexico less than a year from its own presidential elections. President Enrique Peña Nieto’s popularity is the lowest since Pew began asking in 2011, a year before he ran for office.

"Mexicans had largely overcome their distrust of the United States over the past two decades and embraced a new era of cooperation,” said Andrew Selee, president of the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute and a veteran Mexico observer. “But now many have started to wonder if they trusted the United States too much and whether they should look elsewhere for alliances,"
