Some 15,000 people formed a giant pink ribbon to launch the annual campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer in Mexico, at a ceremony headed by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
On Mexico City’s Campo Marte field used for equestrian sports as well as military and government events, the thousands of participants this Monday carried pink umbrellas and together formed a giant pink ribbon, outlined by white umbrellas.
“I wish to greet all of you who are gathered here, to all who are forming this great pink ribbon, which is without doubt an expression of Mexico’s solidarity with this cause,” Peña Nieto said at the ceremony organized by Mexico’s IMSS healthcare agency.
He thanked the participants for their patience, some of whom were members of the federal government’s healthcare institutions, and who had to wait more than four hours for the president to arrive and so be able to start the event, dubbed “Ribbon through Mexico.”
