Hurricane Nate Weakens to Tropical Storm (Wochit News)
Update: Nate Hammers Gulf Coast; More Than 80,000 Without Power in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida (Weather.com)
The NHC issued its first public advisory about the storm, which has been dubbed Tropical Depression 16, on Wednesday. As the system developed, it was dubbed Nate — first as a tropical storm and later, if warranted, as a hurricane — according to the list of 2017 tropical cyclone names.
The federal hurricane center's current forecast track calls for the tropical cyclone to thread its way between Cancún, Mexico, and the western coast of Cuba to enter the Gulf of Mexico. Once in the Gulf, it could strengthen into a hurricane shortly before arriving at the U.S. mainland, possibly by around 8 a.m. ET Sunday.
