MEXICO CITY – Women, said President Felipe Calderon, are the future of Mexico and democracy can not exist without gender equality.
The president celebrated International Women’s Day (Thursday) in the municipality of Ocozocoautla, Chiapas. He reaffirmed his commitment to women, and to promoting them in public life.
He went on to call for municipal, state, and federal governments to close ranks in the defense of gender equality.
“More and more, women are winning popularly elected positions, and are taking on more and more responsibility… The future of Mexico is based on the strength of (our) women, and that’s why we’re going to continue to promote women in national public life. In these times of change, all of (Mexico’s) governments must close ranks to consolidate and broaden our achievements in gender equality.” Before his speech, he spent 10 minutes congratulating women.
He stressed that without gender equality, there is no democracy, which is why, he said, his government has promoted institutional reforms, paving the way for more female representation in politics and improving women’s quality of life. His government has also, he added, spent 70 billion pesos on women’s projects.
“We have made the greatest federal investment in women, favoring gender policies and women’s projects. Every year the budget has grown by 25 percent. The accumulated total between 2008 and 2012 is 70 billion pesos, and 12 billion of that total was exclusively budgeted for the indigenous women of our dear Mexico,” he said.
