Mexico Creates Carlos Fuentes Literary Award Prensa Latina

Carlos Fuentes, Mexico’s elegant public intellectual and grand man of letters, whose panoramic novels captured the complicated essence of his country’s history for readers around the world, died on May 15 in Mexico City. He was 83. (NYTimes)

The Carlos Fuentes International Award for Spanish writing will be created today in Mexico as a way to recognize Spanish language writers who contribute to the enrichment of humanity''s intellectual patrimony.

The award will be created by the Ministry of Education, and is a high honor which the National Council for Arts will grant every Nov 11, coinciding with the birthday of the famous Mexican writer.

The agreement was announced on Monday in the official government gazette, to begin on Tuesday. It will consist of a diploma, a piece of sculpture designed by a well-known artist, and a cash prize.

The foundation of the award highlights 'Carlos Fuentes, one of the most emblematic Spanish intellectuals, with works of fiction and essays and with an essential and active presence in the media'.

His most famous novels include Los dias enmascarados, La region mas transparente, La muerte de Artemio Cruz, Aura and Terra Nostra; and notable essays include Tiempo mexicano, El espejo enterrado, Valiente mundo nuevo and La gran novela latinoamericana.

Fuentes was born on November 11, 1928 and died last May 15 in Mexico City.
