Flights to Mexico appear to be proving a popular option among travelers this year, with the country's tourism ministry releasing figures showing a 5% year-on-year increase in air arrivals during the first five months of 2012.
Approximately 4.9m international guests arrived in the nation between January and May this year.
The majority came from the United States - with American visitor numbers climbing by 1.2% to 2.6m during the period - while the UK sent 6.9% more travellers to Mexico over the course of the five months.
Growth was also recorded in major source markets such as Brazil, China, Australia, France and Germany.
'This is testament to the success of Mexico's tourism diversification strategy designed to aggressively market Mexico's myriad of tourism products to a broad range of global travellers,' the government ministry said in a statement.
Hotels in Mexico experienced growth of 6.3% in occupancy rates between January and May, with destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya proving particularly popular.
