Officials in Mexico are saying air pollution has gotten out of hand.
The Air Protection Department, similar to the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States, has been conducting free smoke checks on over 57,000 vehicles. Over 15,000 of those vehicle were from Mexicali.
They say free smog checks will continue to be offered through September 15th. After that, the smog checks will be mandatory periodically, and they will not be free.
Officials say over 38, 000 Mexican residents died from cardio/pulmonary disease caused by air pollution, between the year 2000 and 2005.
