Hundreds of people have gathered in Mexico City to pay a last tribute to singer Chavela Vargas, who died at the weekend aged 93.
As her coffin arrived at Garibaldi Plaza, home of Mexico’s mariachi music, the crowds drank beer and tequila and sang some of Vargas’ famous numbers.
“She was a goddess, a true bohemian. But she hasn’t gone, she lives on in the hearts of all those who loved her,” one woman said.
An icon in Mexico, Vargas rose to fame flouting the Catholic country’s conceptions of what it means to be a female artist.
She performed lusty ‘ranchera’ songs, wore men’s clothing, carried a pistol and smoked cigars.
Vargas, who recorded 80 albums during her career, died after suffering pulmonary, kidney and cardiac failures.
