Seventy-seven Mexican high school students are wrapping up a five-week stay in the U.S. with hopes that they can use the community service skills they learned to combat social problems like drugs, violence and truancy back home.

The students received training in leadership and community outreach through a program funded by the U.S. State Department, the Mexican government and private donors, and organized by international non-profit group World Learning.

World Learning Senior Program Officer Cari Graves says the skills the students learned through this cultural exchange will help them to create realistic goals for improving their communities.

The students return to Mexico on Thursday. They plan to reconvene in Mexico City next year.
