MEXICO CITY - At least 16,000 people are killed every year in traffic accidents with up to US$11.54 billion in property damage, said Mexican Health Minister Salomon Chertorivsky.
Chertorivsky said traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in the country particulary among youngsters, Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying at the launching ceremony of a safety driving campaign on Thursday.
At least 1 million people are injured in traffic accidents every year with 40,000 left with permanent disabilities.
Chertorivsky said 90 percent of the accidents could be easily prevented.
