Officials have confirmed that there are 236 cases of Dengue fever in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The most infected areas are Tampico, Altamira and Reynosa.
The majority of the cases are classic dengue, but 32 are reported to be hemorrhagic dengue. Hemorrhagic dengue is life-threatening and very severe.
Classic dengue symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain and a skin rash. People with the more severe case of dengue suffer from bleeding, low level of blood platelets and dangerously low blood pressure.
Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes and there is no vaccine for the disease. Government officials are spraying, but asking the public to reduce standing water at their homes and businesses.
The greatest time of risk is during hurricane season, July through November.
