LAREDO TX. - The last four deadly attacks on El Mañana Newspaper, in eight years, are further evidence of the impunity of government complicity with criminals said social activist Javier Sicilia, earlier this week in Laredo, Texas.
"Is there collusion? Do they need another test? What you and other media have gone through is a clear example of impunity that the state is not doing its job,” said the poet and leader of the “Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity."
On Thursday, Sicilia met with commercial director of El Mañana Inc. at St. Peter’s Square who talked about national and binational issues.
Javier Sicilia, in his campaign between the two nations, demanded attention and asked for action from legislators and the federal governments of Mexico and the United States for the escalation of violence in our nation.
This increases crimes, drug products, arm trafficking and laundering of U.S. dollars.
Sicilia was in Laredo these past two days before making their way to Washington in hopes to raise awareness among the people and particularly among representatives and governments of the two countries.
Attacks on El Mañana
The murder of Roberto Mora García, director of El Mañana, which occurred on March 19, 2004; the attack of February 6 to the facilities and staff of the newspaper, which left serious irreparable injury to our fellow reporter Jaime Orozco Tey; and more recently this year, the two grenade attacks and bursts of machine guns on May 11 and in July are part of a bad government described as an accomplice of criminals as described by Silicia.
"We are all adrift in a state of total helplessness - you the media and every Mexican citizen. Where is the state? Where is the Mexican government? If there was a really strong government, what has happened to El Mañana and it’s people never would have happened. Never!”
